School Walkouts: Hannah Karim

On February 14, 2018, in Parkland, Florida, a 19 year old former student of Marjory Stoneman Douglass Highschool open fired in the school. This led to 17 fatalities, and many more injuries, making this one of the most deadly school shootings in our history. In response, teens all over the country have been fighting for gun control on social media. One of the most prominent being twitter, where a peaceful protest is going to happen all over the nation. The protest is scheduled for April 20, which is the 19th anniversary for the Columbine Shooting. On this day, students are instructed, to walk out of school for 17 minutes to honor the 17 casualties, and simply come back into class following.
I don’t know how much of an impact this will do, but what I do know is that this country needs to have stricter laws allowing people to get their hands on assault weapons. It should not be as easy as it is to walk into a Walmart and within 20 minutes, walk out with a weapon like an AR15.

  1. i didn't know the walkout was scheduled for april 20th! I thought it was over our spring break and I was disappointed we wouldn't get to participate. hopefully now the whole school can take part in this and we can make a statement to lawmakers.

  2. It is sad that such a tragedy occurred again. However, Dr. Rudes has said that no Booker T. students should walk out and I understand this. Many are signaling that this could pose a threat for students who are walking out as it would make them targets for another tragedy. It is sad that we have to be scared to protest.

  4. A walk out is an influential and strong way for students to show what they believe in.
