Wife of Ohio police shooting suspect said he previously threatened to kill her
After several calls, Candace Smith manages to alert 911 that she is hiding in her bushes from her abusive husband. She was afraid that he will hurt their young daughter who was still inside. Two brave police officers, Eric Joering and Anthony Morelli, responded. Upon entering the apartment, Quentin Lamar Smith shot and killed them both. Candace had reported earlier to a police department that her husband may be abusive but left with no real accusations or complaints.
I feel like if our society started talking and normalizing conversations about abuse, something like this could have been avoided. It is understandable why it is such a taboo topic, but by keeping this quiet, aren’t we giving the abusers more room to do their damage? Perhaps if we can start a conversation, we can make it safer and easier for women like Candace to seek help before it reaches such extremes.
