Kathryn Hine- Children to sue European countries over climate change
http://www.cnn.com/2017/10/19/europe/portugal-children-climate-change/index.html
A group of seven Portuguese kids have come together and decide to sue forty-seven European countries for negligence after their home, the Leiria region of Portugal, experienced multiple forest fires over the summer. The kids, the youngest being eight years old, plan on going to the European Court Of Human Rights with their case, in hopes that the court will be able to have the nations better comply with the Paris climate agreement. All of the legal fees have been paid for through crowdfunding, and the kids have been communicating through WhatsApp. The wildfires that sparked this lawsuit left 62 people dead last June, and just last week, another set of wildfires in north Portugal left 41 dead.
This article give me a lot of hope for the future, To see that there are people my age and younger actively working against climate change is extremely inspiring. Also, these children's use of technology is really cool. The group hasn't ever met, but were able to set up a case through WhatsApp and crowdfunding! That's amazing! But this article also shows how dire of a situation climate change is, and how necessary the Paris Climate Agreement is.
This reminds me of the many strikes that the child workers had during the early 20th century. In both cases kids were taking matters into their own hands in order to better their lives.
