Melanie Escalante- church relocated plaques of Lee and Washington

Summary: In Alexandria, an Episcopal church, is removing their plaques of historic figures, Robert E. lee and George Washington. The plaques have never served a religious purpose and the protests in Charlotte this year have motivated the church to move them. The relocation will be discussed and agreed upon by a group of people of the church. However, other items with historic background will not be removed as the Church doesn’t want to “erase history”.
Synthesis: Similar to this, recent protests in Dallas have also fought towards the removal of the Robert E. Lee statue. The urge to remove the statue in Dallas stemmed from many people while the urge to remove the plaques from church came from the church itself. In Dallas the historic symbol stood in a park while the plaques in Alexandria stood in a church, both communal areas.
Analysis: I haven’t gone to many churches but from what I’ve seen, there are no historic decorations or symbols placed anywhere. I wouldn’t think to mix history with religion unless it’s the history of that religion but then again I don’t have my own church so whatever. I would think that placing historical meaning in a church would distract from the purpose of a church but then again, having it there wouldn’t do any harm either. I like how the church has gathered together and overall understands the opinions and views of others and is attentive to the history that happens in our world everyday. Usually Churches are old and have been around for a long time, such as this one, so I think it’s nice that people of the church are trying to stay woke and up to date with the world around them.

  1. I think that historical items should be placed in churches as along as it pertains to the church. I don't know the church's reason for having the plagues but from reading this, it sorta' seems unnecessary.
