Following sexual assault allegations from Anthony Rapp, Kevin Spacey has released an apology letter in which he comes out as gay. The alleged incident took place in 1986, 31 years ago, which would have meant that Rapp was 14 and Spacey was 26. After the politicization of the incident, a TV show in which Spacey acted in, House of Cards, has been suspended, and Spacey has had an Emmy award withdrawn.
In addition to many people being disappointed with House of Cards being cancelled, many are also disappointed with Spacey using his sexuality to protect himself from his predatory behavior. Spacey chose a very inopportune time to come out, and despite it being good to see an A-list actor come out, using this to try and get a "pass" on his outrageous actions is absolutely unacceptable. The situation that is unfolding greatly mirrors that of Harvey Weinstein and sexual assault allegations targeting him. This article is significant because it unearths the frequency of sexual assault in Hollywood.

Honestly it's a shame. Because I started watching that show a few months ago and actually really liked it. I am disappointed that this type of event happened. However I'm not going to judge because he didn't deny it just to protect his reputation. However, one thing bothers me. WHY THE HE** DO YOU JUST NOW BRING SOMETHING THAT HAPPENED 31 YEARS AGO JUST NOW? That was directed Anthony Rapp. If something like that happens, you report it or accuse it then. Not 31 years from then.
ReplyDelete31 years ago it wasn’t as big a deal. There was no awareness for sexual assault and people generally thought less of it. This doesn’t disregard what he did, however I think that it catching up to him now was bound to happen sooner or later. As of now the movements and propaganda surrounding gay communities are very fortified and protected, so him trying to join that crowd is logical but scummy. Ultimately I agree with Sams viewpoint on the incident
DeleteMajority of men accused of sexual assault are either able to continue to live their lives or are given a slap on the wrists. The evolution of the way we treat women is getting better every day and so we must continue this.
ReplyDeleteInteresting how the president on the tv show is being held to a higher standard than our current president.
ReplyDeleteThe thing that bothers me is that people who have power and money, seem to think that the rules that the rest of us play by, don't apply and/or don't mean squat to them.
