Opioid crisis: Childhood friends die on same day, half a mile apart

Two teen boys in Georgia died from lethal doses of fentanyl. The toxicology report found he had taken a toxic mix of heroin and fentanyl, a synthetic opioid so powerful it's often fatal. Dustin Manning and Joseph Abraham were childhood friends, in middle school they began getting interested in drugs. They died on Friday, May 26, in Lawrenceville, a suburb on the outskirts of Atlanta. Last year, about 64,000 Americans died from opioids, according to the first government account of nationwide drug deaths. That is more than the number of Americans killed in car accidents or by guns, combined. President Trump has declared opioid addiction a public health emergency, which officials say will allow the federal government to waive some regulations and give states more flexibility in how they use federal funds.
This story, as well as others I've heard, including what happened to someone in our very own school, really opens my eyes to the real danger of drugs. Unfortunately, drugs are one of those things that teenagers come across at some point, in my opinion I think spreading awareness and educating teens on the subject, is far more productive than saying "Don't do Drugs".

  1. It’s sad that it takes tragedies like these to get people to realize how harmful drugs can be. I wish there was a way everyone could understand that.

  2. I agree, I think it's more efficient if kids are educated and made aware about drugs. It really sucks that so many deaths are occurring due to opioids.

  3. Anti- drug education in the US has really screwed the younger generation when it comes to actual facts on the dangers of drug use. "Dont do drugs" policies leave kids wondering why drugs are bad, yet are left with no explanation. Drug use has become an epidemic due to the uneducation of kids and accessibility of lethal drugs.

  4. I agree that instead of yelling at children to not do drugs, it is important to educate kids on what is in certain and the negative connotations of them.
