Jennifer Huynh - Trump Tries to Shift Focus as First Charges Reportedly Loom in Russia Case

SummaryPresident Trump’s frustration at the investigations pertaining to his campaign’s ties with Russia boiled over on Sunday, as he threw a bunch of accusations against Hillary Clinton. In a series of Twitter posts, Trump said Republicans were now pushing back against the Russia allegations by looking into Clinton. But Trump, who has often expressed anger that his allies were not doing more to protect him from the Russia inquiries, made it clear he believed that Clinton should be pursued more forcefully, writing, “DO SOMETHING!” He did not specify who should take such action, but critics have accused him of trying to improperly sway the inquiries. Trump was apparently referring in his tweets to revelations last week that Clinton’s campaign and the Democratic National Committee had paid for research that was included in documents made public in January by BuzzFeed. The documents contained claims about connections between Trump, his associates, and Russia. Trump was also reviving the unproved accusations that Clinton was part of a conspiracy in which the Clinton Foundation received donations in exchange for her support as secretary of state for a business deal that gave Russia control over a large share of uranium production in the United States. Not only that, he was returning to questions about Clinton’s use of a private email server and how James B. Comey, the former F.B.I. director, handled an investigation into the matter, which was closed with no charges being filed. Trump cited the email case as a reason for firing Comey before conceding that it was because of the Russia inquiry.

Analysis: In this article, it is reported that Trump has formed and brought back a series of accusations against other political figures regarding the Russia investigation, especially Hillary Clinton, his former election rival. It can be argued that he is just taking precautions and making sure that our nation is defense, however, other political figures have criticized the president for this action. For example, Senator Rob Portman said the president had been “too defensive” about Mr. Mueller’s inquiry and added on, “We ought to instead focus on the outrage that the Russians meddled in our elections." Ty Cobb, the White House lawyer handling the response to the Russia investigation, said that the president’s tweets were “unrelated to the activities of the special counsel, with whom he continues to cooperate.” These two criticisms can be related to how in US History, there is always at least one person who disagrees with a power, such as how Bartelomé de las Casas disagreed against enslaving the Native Americans regardless of what others have thought of his ideals.
