Gun Debate//Trevor Turnbow

Following the horrifying shooting in Las Vegas debates on gun regulations have once again sparked. This article talks about the unlikelihood of any reform actually taking place. In this situation Trump has had a very apolitical reaction, which is different for him. It's a very presidential statement, and it is wildly accepted and isn't going to ostracize part of the nation which is good. Some Democrats tend to be pushing for gun regulation policy changes, while some republicans find it disgusting to make a tragedy political. Democrats attempting to mobilize and make some changes, but looking in the past at events like Sandy Hook and Columbine there is no expectation for change to occur.
The phrase "thoughts and prayers are not enough" has been floating around and it really hit me hard. The accuracy of this statement is incredible. People seem to make a Facebook post about the horror of the incident and that they are sending prayers, but nobody is actually looking into solving this problem. Kentucky Gov. even tweeted "To all those political opportunists who are seizing on the tragedy in Las Vegas to call for more gun regs...You can't regulate evil..." But the problem with that is you're just saying that this is inevitable and there is nothing to do to stop it, cutting off the conversation like this is exactly the wrong thing to do. There needs to be an open dialogue on solutions to this problem, you'd think it would've happened at this point considering the amount of mass shootings have occurred in the past. (Pulse, Batman movie theater, Columbine, Sandy Hook, UT tower shooting) and that's just naming ones off the top of my head. We've gone far past the limit, something needs to change.

  2. I agree with you 100%, thoughts and prayers only go such a long way in these circumstances, a soultion needs to be made to prevent further mass shootings. I believe in the right to bare arms and if persay guns were made illegal, people would find a way to obtain them illegally. I believe if sticter gun regulations were put in practice it could potentialy prevent future mass shootings or shootings in general. It astonishes me how a soultion such as having stricter gun laws hasn't been conducted considersing the amount of mass shootings there have been.

  3. I do think that enacting stricter gun regulations are a step in the right direction, but that's only one singular piece of the problem. I don't think that completely halting domestic terrorism in its tracks is anything remotely close to realistic. I don't know if I completely agree with the Governor, but I do think that this situation is not going to be solved with improved regulations upon firearms. What other people have proposed is a better, nationally-regulated mental illness identification and treatment system, as many of these events involve shooters with some form of mental illness that urged them to initiate.

  4. Can't one argue that by turning a plea for safety and the enacting of common-sense, by-partisan gun-control legislation into a politically divisive issue, the governor has done more to "politicize" the shooting than the politicians trying to prevent another event such as this from happening in the future?

  5. I agree that something needs to change however I don't think there is one solution like gun control. I also agree with many republicans in that I think it is too soon to make this issue political. While change does need to occur, I think now is not the time to place blame.

  6. I definitely agree with you on the fact that something desperately needs changing, wether it be a law made or blatant restrictions on guns, I think some kind of measure needs to be taken to prevent a terrorist attack from happening again. When 9/11 happened, airport security greatly increased, so why aren't more restricting gun laws being created to prevent this kind of terrorist attack from happening again?

  7. When a tragedy like this occurs, something good must come out of it. Some sort of change must happen to prevent something like this from happening again. Thousands of people die every year to to lack of gun control laws, and if Trump doesn't do anything about it, hopefully the next one will.

  8. Gun control cannot and will not stop criminals from committing seriously damaging crimes. There are precautions that can be taken to slow them down, but no regulations or restrictions will be able to stop illegal obtainment of weapons.

    1. But that's exactly the problem, people just mark these situations off the list as things that are unavoidable and out of our control and entirely shut the conversation down, rather than open the discussion to new ideas and solutions to this really pressing matter. There are plenty of countries where the mass shooting rate is nowhere near as high as they are in america so we know it's possible to fix it, whether that be by stricter gun regulations or more mental health awareness some action needs to be taken to show that we won't just give our thoughts and prayers and continue to let these "unstoppable" massacres keep happening.
