Californian Inmates Help Battle Raging Wildfires
With the help of Cal Fire, LAFD, and the State Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation jointly operate 43 adult conservation camps throughout California. A conservation camp is exactly what the name implies, it conserves the parks. Inmates in teams of 12-14 joined by a fire captain they take on the joined wildfires at the front line. Their job is to stop the fire by creating a boundary made by controlled burns. As payment the inmates get payed by the hour and get time off for each day of good behavior. It also makes inmates feel like they are giving back to the community. They also have a lower rate of repeat offender by 10% than the other inmates.
