Eight sailors on the USS Eisenhower were injured on Friday in an accident involving the aircraft landing. The gear that usually catches landing airplanes broke on the deck of the ship that was stationed in Virginia at the time. There were no fatalities and the sailors are said to be in stable condition with no life-threatening injuries. The airplane later regained flight and returned safely back to it's base at Norfolk Naval Station Chambers Field. The aircraft is not damaged and none of the aircrew members were injured. The Eisenhower is conducting carrier qualifications for an upcoming deployment and the Navy is investigating the cause of the accident.
Although no one was killed during this incident and few were injured, it's still a very unfortunate event. It will be interesting to find out what the cause behind the equipment breaking was and what actions will be taken to ensure that this doesn't occur again. Hopefully in the future, changes will be made so that ships won't have more malfunctions like this one.
