Obama, Cuba Making History - Erin O'Day

This is an opinion piece about the Obama's historic trip to Cuba. It is the first time a US president has actually been to Cuba in 90 years and may just be signaling a thawing of relations between the US and Cuba. Cubans celebrated and were dumbfounded throughout the country as they began to realize what this would mean for Cuba.

I think it's great that our president took the initiative to go to Cuba and attempt to mend a very damaged relationship, damaged by years of an embargo that has led to much suffering for the Cuban people. In the 60s, there was much fear of communism, so when Cuba became communist, many Americans were afraid because of how close it was to them. Later, the Cuban missile crisis was the closest call with full out nuclear warfare. There has been much fear and distrust between the two countries ever since, but hopefully, with the example of our president, congress will lift the embargo and mend relations with Cuba and the rest of Latin America.
