Luz Lopez(4th period)- A family's mental health journey: Emergency, illness, recovery, stability

In 2010, Pam Lipp received a call from her husband telling her that their 18 year old daughter, Amanda, tried to kill herself by trying to throw herself in front of a car. She had lost grip on reality and fell into a state of psychosis. She had believed that cameras were always following her. Amanda was soon diagnosed with bipolar disorder. She first started with the signs of bipolar in middle school. She had extreme mood swings. By the time she went to college, she was barely speaking to her parents. She was later put in a hospital to help her manage her depression. She no longer saw her disease as a disease, she saw it as a piece of art.
I found this story very extraordinary. This girl went through a lot to get where she is now. This story reminded me of the Holocaust. The jews were taken into camps where they were starved and killed. Many of them just killed themselves to stop the suffering.

  1. So interesting, in a tragic way of course! How awful it must be to be her parents and see her enduring so much and being unable to help her... I personally have no idea what I'd do if someone I loved started losing grip on reality.
