Madi Thoele, 4th Period: Another Case of Lead Poisoning

Summary: Another child has been poisoned by lead in Baltimore, Maryland. A 1 year old girl had a high level of lead in her body due to paint chippings from the walls in her house. The reason the paint had such high levels of lead was because their house was built in the 1930's, before the public was educated and it was banned. Half a million children in the US get lead poisoning each year. It can cause many health issues, like learning disabilities and slow/incomplete development.

Analysis: It's sad that this is still happening, and has been for decades. This can be related to U.S. History through the slums in urban cities during the industrialization of the U.S. Slums had poor living conditions, unsanitary/nonexistent bathrooms, and not enough space for how crowded they were. These unsafe characteristics of the homes took a toll on the children. They became malnourished and had breathing problems. Both modern lead poisoning and past slums negatively affect children, and I'm glad that America is more educated on both.
