Miss America Crowns First Winner of Indian Decent by: Steffani Lopez

Nina Davuluri was crowned Miss America on Sunday, and soon after some incredibly racist outspoken people voiced their opinion via social networks. She's a 24 year old from Fayetteville, New York who has a degree in brain behavior and cognitive science. The big deal about her, however, is that she's the first Indian-American winner of the Miss America pageant. When her father emigrated to the United States 30 years ago to become a gynecologist, the issues of Al Qaeda hadn't been a threat to the US yet. Someday she hopes to be a physician as well. During her reign as Miss America, she will promote healthy lifestyles and serve as a spokesperson for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

For some reason people are having a hard time accepting that even if she is "Indian-American" she's still American and that's the part that counts. After reading some of the comments made on twitter regarding her race, i was sick to my stomach that people can't accept people for their accomplishments and mindsets but rather their ancestors that are somehow related.

  1. I think all the negative press surrounding the event is ridiculous. In case all these citizens forgot, America was founded by immigrants for immigrants, we are a multicultural country and I think it's wonderful that the winner this year represents some diversity.

  2. It's a shame that people are making such a big deal about this. Really the fact that its an issue at all just shows how far America has yet to come regarding acceptance of diversity.

    1. Well, it has come pretty far considering she won it in the first place

  3. I think that it's sad that her winning the pageant has been so controversial. As you said, she is in fact an American and therefore her winning should be 100% accepted. I also think people should be celebrating and focusing more on the fact that someone as intellectually driven as her won the pageant, which sets a great example for young girls (and young people in general) to pursue careers in math and science.

  4. Comment by Rhyann lee 5th period!
I think it's great that someone with a different race won. Not everybody needs to look the same all the time! I feel that people just need to get over race it's never going to change !

  5. The issue with Miss America has proven to me how much racism is still effecting us today. We are far from seeing the end of it by making prejudice assumptions based on race alone. It's really sad to here.

  6. Miss America is a huge title. I think it's amazing that she won and people should be happy that she is the first Indian to win. It's a great accomplishment and we should celebrate diversity not dismiss it.

  7. Congrats on Nina for winning the crown, though the comments the people are making is ridiculous, we still came on pretty far knowing she won first place, still we have a had time accepting, even though she is american, and will do good deeds.

  8. I actually did watch the Miss America Pageant this year and I think that it really goes to show how much America has changed over the years. We are much more accepting now than we were before. I just can't believe that people are still making such a big deal about it...

  9. The negative responses to this are very depressing. Her winning should be a good thing, to show that we have become more open and should represent progress. She seems like a very intelligent person as well. We still have a long way to go.

  10. I think that it is absolutely wonderful that a woman of Indian Decscent won. The fact that people are making a big deal about it and causing conflict just shows how ignorant our country can be. Her crown symbolizes our diversity and openess as a country and those who are opposing it just make it hard to see it that way.

  11. The fact that people are being racist is ABSOLUTELY ridiculous...shows how mature we really are...Just the other day I was sitting in front of some people at school that wouldn't shutup about how Miss America is a terrorist...Really guys? My thing is this...To be American...we all had to come from somewhere right? I mean, none of us are legit Americans. Our ancestors came from everywhere to this country to be called Americans...all of us are immigrants. So I thought this was beautiful that we were diversifying the pageant....To be honest it would be a bit boring if a person of the same race won every year...it makes it interesting.

  12. I can't believe people make such a big deal about it still. America has grown so much and to see this become so controversial. It's really dumb and I'm glad she won. She is the start of something new - Michelle Zuniga

  13. I, too, am glad she won. I think that things like this must happen in order for change to happen all together. I feel sorry for her, because I am sure this contraversary is only making her question herself and making her feel like she isn't good enough. But, the rest of America gets to see that times are finally changing, for the better.
