McKenzie Hartmann- Child Predator Plotted to Kidnap and Torture Children -4th Period

Geoffrey Portway is the kind of man who engenders a special kind repulsion in regard to decency.  Federal Authorities have recently uncovered evidence to suggest that the 40 year old child porn distributor had legitimate intent to kidnap, imprison, abuse and consume a child.  Amongst the disturbing articles found in his possession, over thousands of files of child porn, a locked, soundproof basement containing a steel cage, butcher knives, bondage equipment and a child sized coffin.  Portway has plead guilty to distribution and possession of child pornography and solicitation to commit a crime of violence, though has yet to release a statement suggesting any explanation or remorse for his heinous deeds.  Additionally, conversations between the defendant and other online predators suggest Portway bragged about his 'dungeon' where he intended to keep and abuse a child.  Two of the online predators he chatted with, who share his vile fascination of grotesque practices, have already been incarcerated.  One of which being a puppeteer who collaborated with Portway in a plot to kidnap children from his local church.   Portway's lawyer defends his client claiming the criminal is the the victim of an overactive imagination and the torture materials are simply props of a role play situation.  However, the truly horrifying nature of Portway's resolve demands effective action be taken for the general well being of the public.  His is scheduled to be sentenced on September 17.
There are no words to accurately describe odiousness of such an individual.  Upon reading the article I was overcome with an acute feeling that humanity had reached a new low; then I was struck with a horrifying though, that perhaps we've been at this point all along.  Today we are engulfed in brutality, wether it be through the ubiquitous crime shows on tv or the countless books and stories revealing all the sordid details of some gruesome crime.  After many of the most ominous occurrences, the viewer instinctively breaths a sigh of relief at the reminder that it is only fiction.  I don't think anyone breathed a sigh of relief at Geoffrey Portway's capture; for his computer was rife with the reminder that he isn't alone, and monsters out of those tv shows and clever stories are in fact real.  Furthermore, the fact that Portway's known accomplice worked in such close proximity to children is a chilling discovery that reinforces just how pernicious the situation could've become.  The idea that these two conducted all their exploits online is a sickening thought.  These days, criminals are no longer traceable by traditional tactics and with the increasing complexity of technology, it is becoming harder and harder to bring the guilty to justice.  I don't care if Portway is the victim of a demented mind, or an overactive imagination, justice must be done and Portway deserves a very long sentence to preserve the safety and well being of those around him.
