Six British soldiers (Iosefo Yavala, Iliakini Raderua, Thomas Shute, Felite Vunisarati, Mosese Kuruala, and Joeli Raduva) have been arrested early Friday morning and accused of attacking an NYPD cop outside a bar in Manhattan's Murray Hill neighborhood, according to New York Police Department spokesman Sgt. Thomas Antonetti. A verbal conversation turned into a violent fight. This case is still very unclear and under investigation. The group of soldiers were visiting New York City for a battalion rugby match. The officers that was attacked suffered lacerations and bruising to the face and head. They were immediately taken to the hospital and were cared for. The British soldiers were charged with third-degree assault. One of the British soldiers also tried to steal the cops cell phone and was also charged with robbery. The British Ministry of Defence stated that "aware of an incident in New York involving some British Army soldiers. This is a matter for the NYPD and it would be inappropriate to comment while there is an ongoing investigation. All those who are found to fall short of the Army's high standards will face disciplinary action, up to and including discharge, if appropriate." Three of the soldiers will appear to court on Tuesday.
These six British Soldiers need to be discharged from the British military. They cannot just come into America and attack an NYPD cop. They should be pressed charges to the full extent. This is not acceptable. Although the case is still unclear and under investigation, the British Ministry of Defance should be not just be saying they possibly might discharge them, but instead already do that in this case. I hope that this all gets resolved in the best way.
I completely agree their behavior is unacceptable. They must face the repercussions of their actions both in the eyes of the US justice system and that of their own government. Soldiers are trained to act in accordance with the law and respect all people, their conduct was unbecoming of an officer and extremely out of line.
