There has been a memo going around the Department of Health and Human Services that could redefine the government's definition of "sex", possibly leading to protection for trans people being revoked. This obviously has instigated fear in many, resulting in rallies in Washington Square Park and in front of the White House. In addition, trans people have started posted pictures of themselves on social media and using the hashtag "WontBeErased". Other recent events barring transgender people from certain activities are adding to the rising concern. Trump's administration is trying to keep them from being a part of the military. As for the LGBTQ+ community, a policy was implemented earlier this month that refuses same-sex partners of foreign diplomats from obtaining visas if they aren't legally married.
The main purpose of this article is to raise awareness. These actions of discrimination seem relatively small to some, but they are devastating to a particularly vulnerable group of people. It's very important for cis people to try to understand what it's like to be transgender and what they have to go through. In addition, if it isn't stopped, this will lead to even worse outcomes for transgender people in the future. They already face discrimination, and restrictions are being placed that keep them from living their lives, simply because of their identity. On the topic of minority groups serving in war, I don't understand why President Trump restricts transgender people from serving in the military. Slaves fought in the American Revolution, why shouldn't these people be able to fight if they feel a sense of duty towards their country? I am aware that the experiences of slaves and transgender people are completely different, and I also want to address that they have both been denied basic human rights.

My current event was about this topic as well. I liked how you recognized that cis people really don't understand what transgender people are going through, and I also liked how you mentioned the military policies that are being placed on transgender people.
ReplyDeleteWhat the Trump administration is doing is disgusting! It has taken so much time and effort to get this far(mind you, it's still not very far) and all Trump is doing is setting all of our work back. People should be able to do what makes the happy as long as they aren't harming anything or anyone.

DeleteThis is such an alarming moment for the trans community. Trump shouldn't be allowed to do this. He keeps taking away the rights of any community that isn't supportive of him. - Leslie Vasquez
