Polio like cases -Grecia Jimenez

Over the past few months, several cases of a polio-like disease called acute flaccid myelitis, or AFM, have come up in young children. The disease affects the part of the spinal cord called "grey-matter" and causes paralysi. Symptoms for AFM are very similar to other neurologic diseases. Causes of the disease have yet to be identified. So far, the CDC has reported 155 patients under investigation for AFM.

This sudden peak in this disease can be compared with the polio wave that affected hundreds of families. Polio also causes paralysis, the difference is that now we have a vaccine for it, but not for AFM. Although AFM isn't as common as polio was, it is a similar case with the struggle to find a cause and cure.

  1. Emma Burkey: This is unsettling that we have another disease alike to polio in present day. I pray that we aren't hit with another polio wave, and that a cure is found soon.
