After a recent vote by the Supreme Court ruled that Native Americans living on a reserve can not vote because there is no address assigned to the reserve. These people feel their rights are being violated(which they are) and there is nothing they can do other than try to get an address assigned to the reserve.
I think this is just stupid! No person should be denied the right to vote because they don't have an address on their ID. Those people should have the same rights as all of the other people they are allowing to vote. I think this can relate to the trail of tears. These Native Americans are being pushed out for something they have no control over. They are trying to take a nice approach to this by asking for an address, but who knows where this will end up going.

It is terrible that Native Americans are being denied their right to vote. This is not a simple misunderstanding. The government is intentionally stripping these people of their rights.
ReplyDeleteI somewhat disagree with this. Most Native American reserves are treated by the government as independent, sovereign nations. They aren't exeptionally invested in American politics, nor have any desire to be, as they, for the most part, govern themselves.

This is just the continuation of the systemic oppression of Native people. If anyone, they deserve to have a say in who is elected to office.

I think Dillon is correct, but I still think that hey should have the opportunity to vote even if they never do. The EXCUSE the government gives for this ruling some bs. If their reasoning is because they are a separate nation, they should say that AND treat the reservations completely as such.
ReplyDeleteThe Native Americans should have the right to vote even though they don't have an address. They've been brutally treated since the trail of tears, they should at least have the right to vote.
