far right parties fight for influence in italy and austia - will goodell
https://www.cnn.com/2018/10/21/europe/south-tyrol-italy-austria-messner/index.html
about half a million voters go to the polls this week in italy's most northern apline region to elect a new parliament and two local authorities. it is an autonomous region, and the election will be a test to the european union's ideals integration. recently, there has been an advance of far right and anti-immigration populists in the government of rome, along with offers from far right austrian officials to give a majority german speaking region in italy passports to austria as some sort of bargin. the regional government has been controlled by a center left coalition for decades, that include christian democrats and socialists. traditionally a poor area, today it is among one of the most profitable and rich in italy and europe. now, xenophobic alt right parties are threatening the stablity of a fragile national government. this ongoing story reminds me a little of hitler's rule in austria and surrounding countries, and how he used fear tactics to get people to vote for him.
