Faith Wangermann-Transgender Recognition in the US

In an article published today by Erica L. Green, Katie Benner, and Robert Pear of the New York Times, news from the Department of Health and Human services regarding the recognition of transgender identity is discussed and put in context with other arguments and decisions made by the Trump administration and the previous Obama administration. Today's announcement is that the Department is moving towards a strict definition of sex assigned at birth, unchangeable, and any disputes would be clarified with a genetic test, therefore nullifying protections for transgender people and "defining them out of existence". This article was written for people who have followed the issue of recognizing and legally protecting the gender identity of many people. The events in this article can be compared to the events of last year, when President Trump moved to ban transgender people from serving in the military, a ban that had been removed by the previous administration.
