Wolfgang Hunter - Government bombing of Damascus suburbs kills more than 100

The Syrian government, for the second day in a row, has condoned bombing of several of the northeastern neighborhoods in Damascus, Syria's capital. The bombings are just the latest attempt by government forces to weed out insurgents imposing the despotic rule. Over 100 of the 400,000 civilians trapped in the city have been killed by these raids, with the number only to continue rising. Neither the government nor Russia, the dictatorship's closest ally, have yet to respond on the seemingly outright human rights violations undertaken in the past several days.

I would love to condemn the actions committed by government forces, as well as the supposed backing of these actions by one of the world's largest superpowers, but I'm too ill-informed on the situation between Syria's established government and the insurgents to give a formal response. Of course, there are definite human rights violations here, which I am most certainly not condoning, but it would help to understand the motive, which is not clearly stated within the article.
