The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), may undergo some major changes if the Trump administration's new proposal to provide SNAP recipients with pre-packaged boxed/canned food is approved by congress. The proposal, announced Monday, Feb. 12, is included in the Trump budget request for 2019.
SNAP, formerly referred to as "food stamps" currently supplies beneficiaries with money that is loaded onto an EBT card that they may use to by food of their choosing that is listed under the SNAP guidelines. But with a new proposal underway, recipients would instead receive about 50% of their benefits from a "USDA Foods Package". The package is described as containing packaged cereals, pasta, and ready to eat foods, as well as tinned/preserved fruits and vegetables but no foods that are truly fresh. The Trump administration says this action is a "cost-effective approach" with "no loss in food benefits to participants."
This as well as other changes to the SNAP program will apparently reduce the SNAP budget by $213 billion, cutting the program by almost 30 percent over the next few years. (According to the Trump Administration)
