Presidential portraits of Barack and Michelle Obama were unveiled at the National Portrait Museum, part of the Smithsonian institution. The Obamas are the first black couple to be showcased in this section of the museum. The article says, "Mr. Wiley (the artist of Barack Obama's portrait) depicts Mr. Obama not as a self-assured, standard-issue bureaucrat, but as an alert and troubled thinker. Ms. Sherald’s (the artist pf Michelle Obama's portait) image of Mrs. Obama overemphasizes an element of couturial spectacle, but also projects a rock-solid cool."
This is a step stone in integration of civil rights for racial minorities. These portraits stand for more than the Obamas- they stand for all the civil liberties and differences the Obamas tried to make on the American society. These portraits also show how an artist can impact political/societal changes.
