Lowering the voting age

Myah Hasbany

Students that were victims of the Parkland school shooting are speaking out in peaceful protest. Most of the students are directly calling out legislators, and refusing to accept their "thoughts and prayers and nothing more". By protesting peacefully, they are proving that civil engagement by youth can make a difference and call for change. If they had the right to vote, more laws restricting guns could be passed. This article argues for the voting age to be lowered. According to the article, lowering the voting age "has the potential to increase turnout significantly". Having the voting age at 18 probably on of the worst ages because they are leaving home for school and requesting an absentee ballot if they aren" home.

This article was written to argue for a younger voting age, so it has opinions. This has historical context to the lowered voting age following the Vietnam War.

  1. What are your opinions of the voting age? Which amendment was it that lowered the voting age after Vietnam?
