Family Who Took Florida Suspect In says 'We Just Didn't Know'- Heaven-Leigh Pettis

'We Just Didn't Know'

The family who took in Nickolas Cruz after the death of his mother say they knew he was depressed from his mother's death but had no idea how seriously troubled he was until he shot up Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Before he lived with The Sneads, he lived with his mom's close friend but there was tension because he owned many guns that weren't secured. His mom's friend had a toddler and didn't want the baby around a bunch of weapons. The Sneads owned guns themselves and keep them locked up so they took Cruz in. They had Cruz buy a gun safe and keep his guns locked up in it. Because The Sneads knew he was depressed, they were going to get him help and put him on medication. He was supposed to go to a counselor the week he had shot up the school.
It's sad that he wasn't able to receive help in time but at the same time, it's terrible that 17 innocent people lost their lives due to him being troubled. I know that there are a bunch of people upset with the consequences of his actions. He's supposed to be getting committed a mental hospitable but lots of people believe he should rot in jail or receive the death penalty. I'll be completely honest, I felt really bad for him after hearing about his mother passing away and him being depressed. I feel sorry for him but at the same time, he did something terrible.

  1. I wonder if the Sneads knew that Cruz had access to the locked safe? It seems like they were trying to keep the guns away from him.

  2. School is suppose to be a safe place. Now I'm not so sure.

  3. Olivia Wall- I heard about the story, and I think it is crazy that something like that could have happened when that family was just trying to help.

  4. I feel so bad for this family of they truly had no idea. They did everything they could to keep him from doing something awful. I would feel bad for this boy because mental illness in America is often left untreated, but at the same time, 17 innocent people my age and younger lost their lives. So, tbh, no sympathy for him.
