John Brennan, the former director of the CIA, accused Republican Representative Devin Nunes of California, the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, of releasing information to accuse law enforcement officials of getting a warrant to monitor communications of a former Trump campaign advisor. Brennan sad that he “has abused the chairmanship of [the Intelligence Committee.” Brennan ran the CIA when they were investigating Trump’s campaign interference by the Russians. He said that the summer of 2016 he learned some information from a British intelligence officer. Nunes’ memo says that the documents were essential to getting the warrant, but doesn’t say which parts of it were used. Brennan said he knew about the memo even though he didn’t get to see it, but he thinks that the FBI should have done something about it. He made it very clear that the documents play no role in assessing Russian interference, and that the FBI already had their own information. The memo’s release has raised questions if President Trump will fire the Deputy Attorney General, but he has tried to do something similar before and failed when he tried to fire the special counsel, Robert Mueller III. The former White House chief of staff said that the Washington Post reported wrong that the president was going to fire Mueller, and that it was just a conflict of interest but never going to move to firing him.
The article was written by Shane Harris for the Washington Post on February 4, 2018. The article seems to be a little biased, and I know that the Washington Post tends to be more liberal, so it could be a little exaggerated. The article was written for people who still think that the Russians interfered with the 2016 election. The article is important because it shows that people are insistent on the fact that Trump didn’t win the election on his own.
