Ben Hesser, who had hurricane relief experience with the Louisiana Air National Guard, borrowed a friend's boat to help with Harvey troubles. He found the Lake Arthur Place nursing home, with residents still inside. Hesser went to the nursing's home administrator, Jeff Rosetta, and asked him to evacuate the patients, and he had boats ready. "You don't understand, I cant give these people to you, I can only give them to the National Guard," explained Rosetta. Husser replied, "Well, that's not the way it's going to work, man. These people are leaving." Eventually, a fight broke out between the two, and Husser drew his gun. "I had to do what I had to do," said Husser. "We had to beat the crap out of Jeff - at least, I did." Nursing homes try to avoid evacuations as much as possible, due to studies showing that leaving the home can be deadlier than staying. Apparently, two of the company's nursing homes in Corpus Christi were evacuated from orders, but the order never came to this home. Even if they did receive orders, it was too late to evacuate, the escape routes around the area had flooded, and there was nowhere to evacuate to. Andrea Coleman, the director of nursing, said she walked into Rosetta's office and saw Husser and two other people cursing at Rosetta. Rosetta's shirt was ripped, he had several cuts on his head, and one of his eyes was bloody. "Jeff Rosetta told Ben and the two other men to get out of his nursing home," stated Coleman. "Ben physically pushed me out of the way and I hit the wall. Ben then removed his gun from its holster and pointed it at Jeff Rosetta's chest.... We cannot just turn over our residents to anyone. We have a responsibility to them and procedures that have to be followed. I was hesitant to let our residents go with the Cajun Navy after the behavior Ben displayed." Husser said, "You're damn right I did (to the statement of his gun), but it was strictly because he was in a tirade, screaming and hollering."
The residents were eventually taken out of the home and to somewhere dry and safe.

I understand that he was trying to help, but pulling his gun was a bit much to be honest.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe he even brought a gun to evacuate a nursing home. What was he thinking?
