NASA astronaut, Scott Kelly, returned to the U.S. Thursday
after spending nearly a year in space to further scientists’ studies on the
effects of long terms in space on the human body. This research ultimately contributes to
preparation for a future crewed mission to Mars. Researchers studied the effects a year in
space had on Scott Kelly’s body including observation of his vision, muscle
mass and bones, heart size, height, and even the amount of radiation he
accumulated.
These events are significant because they pertain to the
U.S.’s advancements in science and technology in addition to mountains moving
in the space field. This can be
synthesized to the Space Race in the 60s and 70s between the United States and
Soviet Union during the Cold War. The
two nations battled out to be the first to reach major scientific accomplishments
such as getting the first satellite into space or having the first person walk on the moon.
