On Tuesday, President Obama recommended the movement of Cuba from the United State's "State Sponsors of Terrorism List." Both the President, as well as Cuba, believed that the status of Cuba on the list was "incorrect and outdated," and that the normalization talks could not continue with Cuba on the list. Many Congressional Republics, including Presidential hopefuls from the party for 2016, believe that this was the wrong move, stating that "we're not a step closer to freedom in Cuba" [Jeb Bush] because of the President's actions. However, some Republicans believe that this is the right decision, stating the importance of the Terrorism list to "mean something." [Sen. Jeff Flake]
This is similar to the detente practiced by Nixon in regard to China and the USSR. Using any of the political cards in his hand, Nixon was able to relieve the high tensions between the US and these Communist nations, ultimately leading to the betterment of the US economy. President Obama may be able to produce a similar effect here, if handled correctly, allowing for lucrative trade and tourism with Cuba.
