Trouble in Paradise - Elisa Weich - p. 5

In June of 2014 the volcano Kilauea erupted sending out lava that has crept towards the town of Pahoa for 10 months. At first, residents were not sure if the lava would reach their town or not, so they closed up shop, the grocery store, the mall, and all restaurants, and evacuated. However, with the lava slowed and the grocery store back open, people are becoming more hopeful about the situation and the national guard has ceased its residency in the town. Hundreds of abandoned pets are being reclaimed as people move back into their homes and children are returning to school. The lava still trudges along, though, so the real concern of the highway has some people turning to self sufficiency in anticipation. The people there are simply having to go with the flow.

Situations like these show the need of the American people for aid from the government. It is good that protocols have been set in place for protection and organization that was given by the national guard. The federal government is a necessary component in security.

  1. You are absolutely right. There needs to be some sort of authority in place, especially when it comes to organizing things for national disasters like this one.

  2. That's crazy how this is actually happening! I agree that the government needs to aid the people in order to ensure their security.
