Venezuela Cuts American Embassy Staff/ Madeline Boreham

Venezuelan president, Nicolas Maduro, stated today that there would be a reduction of the U.S. Diplomatic staff and limit the amount of Americans entering the country.  Some of these men include George W Bush, Dick Cheney, and Bob Menendez. His reason for banning them was that "They were all men who had violated human rights and encouraged terrorism, particularly in Iraq and Syria." The reason for these new restrictions com from the recent detention of several U.S. citizens who were accused of being involved in espionage. As of the moment they are not releasing any further detail as to why the Americans were accused.

It will be very interesting to see how our country reacts to this change. Obviously as long as the job can still be done the Embassy staff will be ok. It is the ban and the information that will follow in the next few days. This relates to the Zimmerman letter during WWI. It was the act os espionage that angered the U.S. and caused them to get involved in the war.  Hopefully this will not end the same way. Also for the other Americans being held there we hope they will be returned safely.

  1. Well, it's easy for me, personally, to see this action as being a slightly positive and a negative change. I can see the admirable action taken by Venezuela in trying to limit their interactions with foreign countries to those who they think have aligned moral standards or similar mindset as them. However, this also poses problems for those trying to enter the country and makes the process of selection of the U.S. Diplomatic Staff much more competitive.
