Ft. Lauderdale Cops Fired Over Racist Texts by Yasmine Bougacha (5th pd)

On Friday, March 20, three police officers were fired and one resigned after a 5-month probation due to racially-charged text messages and a homemade movie filled with racial slurs and insulting stereotypes. These officers made several rude passes at African Americans, Latino Americans, and homosexuals as well as many others. Vulgar messages such as, "I had a wet dream that you two found those two n*****s in the VW and gave them the death penalty right there on the spot," were found on each of the officers' phones when they were searched and it definitely left many people in shock, including the other officers in the department. “The four officers’ conduct was inexcusable, and there is zero tolerance for this type of behavior within the Fort Lauderdale Police Department,” the chief of police said in his statement addressing the issue. The four officers are currently without jobs and will not receive any benefits or their pensions.
Several things are interesting about this article. First of all, it comes from a Russian news source; out of all the current events that are happening and evolving in the United States, why does Russia choose to focus on this small incident about racist cops? Second of all, these texts were reported in October of 2014 and only one of the four cops was put on probation. Why did it take the police department so long to take action with the other cops? And also, how did these officers pass their psychiatric evaluation when there are such disturbing thoughts running around through their head like the one displayed through the text? The article doesn't provide much information on the smaller details of the incident in order to keep it brief, but these key details are make a world of difference in trying to figure out what really happened behind.
