George Mason University engineer students Viet Tran and Seth Robertson (in Virginia) have recently developed a completely new fire extinguisher that uses sound waves to get rid of fire. Tran and Robertson decided to come up with this idea as a project for their senior final exam based off of esperiments that have been done by The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) on blasting out fire with sound. While DARPA had already developed the technology Tran and Robertson used in their project, they had not yet figured out a way to make a handheld device to be used on small house fires and possibly even larger-scale fires. Now, their university is helping them both apply for a provisional patent.
I believe that it's stories like this one that inspire children especially to strive to be innovative and creative. Viet and Seth were just two normal college students trying to find a project for their final exam, and now they have invented something that could save thousands of lives and prevent further damage that water or normal fire extinguisher fluids could cause. I hope that their idea goes far and that they inspire others to try to make the world a better place by thinking outside of the box.
