Pregnant woman, Michelle Wilkins (26), was involved in a stabbing incident after responding to an advertisement on Craigslist in an effort to purchase baby clothes. Seven months' pregnant at the time, Wilkins appeared at the seller's house in Longmont, Colorado where she was violently stabbed and had her fetus torn out by suspect Dynel Lane. When officers, Billy Sawyer and Phil Piotrowski, arrived at the house of the seller, they were shocked by the image of Wilkins covered in blood from head to toe. They entered the house yelling for Wilkins, and she responded with a slight sound screaming "Help me! Help me!"The two were very impressed with the strength of Wilkins, and although the fetus died, Wilkins is gradually becoming healthier. Lane's charge of murder will be decided by whether the fetus could have survived outside of Wilkins's body.
This case of fetal abduction is not the only time that an online transaction has resulted in a fatality. In 2006 (in Boulder County), Octavio Sergio Libman was murdered by two men after they came to his house wanting to buy a car that Libman had advertised online. These killings bring to the surface the issues that online transactions entail. Law enforcement agencies really need to take direct action in order to increase the safety of online sites such as Craigslist. In history, when inventions were created, there were many issues regarding their safety (much like Craigslist), but steps were taken to ensure that safety prevailed.

Words can not describe how disgusted this story makes me feel.. What could possibly drive someone to want to do that to someone?
ReplyDeleteThat's awful, and as to why someone would want to slice a fetus out of another human being is just disturbing. Hopefully there will be a better way to carry out online transactions in the future, maybe that will keep something like this from happening again.

This is absolutely horrible! It would be nice if online transactions couldn't be so anonymous.
ReplyDeleteThis is so disturbing, knowing that we could be tracked anytime and anywhere from the internet.
