African-American Man Found Hanging From Tree in Small Rural Town in Mississippi Madana 4th
African-American man Otis Byrd was found hanging from a tree, dead, in a small rural town in Mississippi. The fact that there was no chair found nearby suggests that this was a homicide rather than a suicide. While there is a chance that this was not race-related, Mississippi has had a very racist history. This connects to our study of the 1960s, a time with a lot of racism, and when the KKK was very active. Clearly, the civil rights movement has made a lot of progress, but events like this prove that we still have a ways to go.
