Georgia Woman's Supporters Cry for Clemency - Hannah Kalan 6th Period

Kelly Gissendaner of Georgia was sentenced to death row after convicted of orchestrating the murder of her husband in 1997. However, after nearly a decade in prison, multiple persons claimed that she had grown spiritually and become a model inmate, many of whom opted for clemency. There was actually a petition stating that she'd turned her life around, which has gathered more than 40,000 signatures in her favor. However, the state court still stands as it had originally, denying her clemency.
The state itself, hadn't executed a women in roughly 70 years, the last woman being Lena Baker, who claimed self defense in 1944. The whole of the United States actually, finds executions of women to be quite rare; only 15 women have been executed since 1977.

It's interesting to see how some states still carry out the death penalty. Several had discontinued it and there was an ordeal about it not too long ago regarding the morality of it, so for Gissendaner to be the only woman on death row in the state is something that might reignite that issue.
