The tough task ahead for Ferguson's next police chief : Vivie Behrens (Period 6, Week 3)

After the recent resignation of police chief, Thomas Jackson, the town of Ferguson, Missouri is looking for a replacement that displays "empathy, confidence, and passion." Ferguson, Missouri is still recovering from the shooting of African-American teenager, Michael Brown, by Darren Wilson, a white police officer. The city is still suffering from numerous protests regarding the incident and on top of that, two police officers were shot last Thursday, just hours after Jackson resigned. Chief Smith, the head police officer in Florida (with a similar racial situation), says that is important that you establish a discussion in the community and create good relations between races, as well as implement a racial ethics program and African-American officer recruitment within the police force.
This effort to relieve racial tensions is similar to the Civil Rights movement in the 1960's in the sense that it is directed towards peaceful means of eliminating racism and discrimination. Both situations stressed the need to start peaceful communication and to create healthy relationships that will lead to less racial tensions and violence. As history has proven, these efforts will take a lot of time, but hopefully, this effort by the Ferguson police force will eventually resolve some of these pressing issues.

  1. I agree with your comparison with the Civil Rights movement. Hopefully the Ferguson police force find a quick way to resolve the racial tensions.
