While speaking to a civic group in Cleveland, President Obama said, "If everybody voted, then it would completely change the political map in this country," calling it "potentially transformative." Not only that, Obama said, but universal voting would "counteract money more than anything."
He was floating the idea of making voting mandatory. Most people who don't vote are young, low-income and mostly immigrants. He believes people keep them away from the polls.
I think this could work really well. Recently at the 50th anniversary of the march at Selma, President Obama also mentions that not enough people are voting and that people risked their lives for everyone to have the right to vote. It's obviously been on the President's mind. Would making voting mandatory take away the freedom of it? I think it is a good thing and having everyone do it would enable America to truly become what the people want.
