“Driver killed in Capitol Hill car chase was depressed mother”

This is an article about a high-speed car chase that occurred on capital hill recently. A mother and her one-year-old child broke past a police barrier and continued driving on capital hill. The police attempted to stop her, but after she ran into a cop car she was shot several times and then promptly died. There appears to be no connection to terrorism. The woman was a dentist who recently had a kid, she was suffering from depression, and this sadness along with the behavior was an abnormality in this woman’s life. Her colleagues say that she was always happy and could never picture her doing anything like this, but her depression caused by having a kid, altered her mental state and caused her to do this. No harm was really caused to anyone but the woman during this event.
This goes to show how little we know about mental disorders. We can fix a broken arm and are working our way toward cancer, but ignore pertinent things like depression and anorexia. We have the technology to make huge advances in the fields of understanding minds, but have yet to pursue it. The way we analyze minds right now is extremely tainted. One brain trying to make sense of another brain is a situation with too many loopholes. How often do people lie in the physiologists office, avoid questions, and claim they are fine? How often do people forget about important events in their life? Suppress feelings? How often do Ex-Rays lie about a broken leg? If we could take the absolute technology to people’s minds, we could prevent diseases like this one from potentially harming lots of people and overall improving peoples’ quality of life.

  1. I certainly hope that resources are re-routed toward finding more effective cures for mental disorders. Things like anorexia and depression are major issues in our society today, and need to be more concentrated on. More events like this may occur if advancements aren't made, and if we are not careful enough, worse things may happen.

  2. So often we here about a shooting and after investigation, the person responsible for the shooting is discovered to be mentally unstable. It is disconcerting to think about how one's mind can cause someone to do such horrible things. There is still so much that is unknown about our brains and how they work. I definitely agree that more knowledge about our minds and how they work will tremendously help society.
