Miley Cyrus on 'SNL': 'Hannah Montana' is dead
By Breeanna Hare, CNN(Rhyann Lee)
Summary:
The 20-year-old pop star has eclipsed nearly every other figure in popular culture in the weeks following her salacious twerking-with-teddy-bears routine with Robin Thicke at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards on August 25.
There was no way "Saturday Night Live" was not going to address the subsequent tidal wave of reaction, and the sketch comedy series smartly attacked it right at the start of the cold open.
"Old Miley" was there to warn that the VMAs routine "might be too controversial" and hit all the references in the process: Cyrus' revealing costume that could potentially land her in prison; the constant tongue wagging ("I'm having tiny strokes, yo!" Cyrus explained); and the stuffed animals as stage props. (Cried one stuffed bear before going on stage, "We shouldn't be doing this! This is for kids!")
And thus began an extremely Miley-heavy episode of "SNL," as she appeared in most of the night's sketches and gave two pared-down performances of her hits, "We Can't Stop" and "Wrecking Ball." While she's made headlines for both the music videos for those songs and her attire while performing them live, on "SNL" Cyrus turned in two tasteful sets that were focused less on her dance moves and more on her voice.
Analysis: I believe the new Miley has grown up and she is trying to erase that Hannah Montana theme. She wants to show everybody she isn't a little girl anymore but it just isn't happening in the right way. One day she will look back on it and realize she acted a little crazy but for now she is just warming up. Worse things are to come!http://www.cnn.com/2013/10/06/showbiz/celebrity-news-gossip/miley-cyrus-snl/index.html?hpt=us_c2
Miley Cyrus has been an icon since she was pre-pubecent. I have a slim feeling that this whole change may be a publicity stunt for her to jump from the C-list, right up to the top of the A-list... but you never know. This may also be a cry for help. I'll be praying for her.
ReplyDeleteI think that Miley wants to get away from her "child star" ways so badly that she doesn't see that what she is doing could be very bad for the children who look up to her. Honestly I hope she finds a happy medium and settles down so that people will leave her alone. But who knows? She's probably doing this because she just wants the attention. -Nia Edwards 4th period
ReplyDeleteMiley Cyrus' actions have been very surprising over the last few months, and I'm not sure if they're helping or hurting her. I watched her SNL performance this past weekend and I was taken back by her comments about Hannah Montana. I did like her musical performances though because they showed off her voice and weren't about the controversial costumes or dance moves.
ReplyDeleteI feel like a lot of celebrities who were child stars go through crazy transitions to prove to their fans that they are now adults. Despite her flashy outfits and provocative performances, Miley was once a role model for many as Hannah Montana. Miley's most recent behavior may not be giving her a good name. But at the same time I think that she's trying to express who she really is after having been know as "Hannah" for such a long time.

ReplyDeleteI'm glad to hear the SNL performance was much more tasteful than her VMA performance. However, I understand why she would want to go crazy with her performances. Former child stars need to distance themselves from their young Disney-like selves and evolve into the artist they want to eventually become.
