Summary: Tory Johnson, a news reporter for ABC's Good Morning America, was told one morning by her boss that she either needed to change her physical appearance or she would be fired. Her boss didn't explicitly say she would be fired but she knew that TV was a visual medium and that looking good was standard. She had always been on the larger side of the scale but had never had enough motivation to get fit. She says that being over weight is like being in prison and not being able to break through the bars. But being let go from the job she loved as enough to make her eat less, eat better, excersize more, and stay positive about losing weight.
Analysis: I find amazing that Tory loves and is dedicated to her job so much that she would change her whole life style, something that she couldn't change her entire life, just so that she could keep working there. She is currently still employed in Good Morning America so obviously she was successful. Staying fit and eating healthy is extremely hard for those who are naturally over weight and the fact that she pushed herself to go through the that pain is really inspiring and that more people should strive to be like Tory. Especially when we are known for consuming the most food and unhealthy food of any other country.

I agree with this, however, I'm sure some faction of viewers were outraged. Being overweight is not only unattractive, but also unhealthy.
ReplyDeleteI think that it's good that she could get herself to the point where she wanted to get healthy, but I feel like the fact that our society only wants attractive, thin people as news anchors and the sort is ridiculous. We're not all built like that.
ReplyDeleteI understand why the network may have asked her to start promoting a healthier, more fit lifestyle. Because obesity rates are higher in America and our, "fast-food craze," a news reporter is a great role model to help motivate peoople to eat clean and exercise.
ReplyDeleteSome readers might have viewed this topic as unreasonable; they might believe that a person's weight and there job shouldn't be connected to one another. However, considering that the threat allowed her to become healthy and feel better about herself, I think her job being connected to her weight helped her in the long run.

ReplyDeleteWoah, I wonder if she could claim her boss was discriminating against her had she not lost the weight. However, high ratings are produced when lots of people tune into the show; and people tune into to shows that showcase others who are "physically appealing" by American societal standards. It's awesome she got fit to better her health.
This can either be motivating or can break someone. It is a really harsh thing to tell someone they have to lose weight to keep their job especially one they love!
