Gloria Jones: Oklahoma Zoo Tiger Mauls Employee's Arm

Last Saturday, a woman employee at a zoo in Oklahoma almost lost her arm due to a tiger attack (I suppose is what you would call it). Basically, a woman broke safety protocol by sticking her hand into an adult male tiger's cage (smart right?). She was wearing a big jacket that got stuck so was not able to pull her hand back in time. This lead to the tiger grabbing her hand and pulling her left arm through a 4 inch square in the wiring of the cage. Within a few minutes after the attack, she was airlifted to a hospital; surgeons were able to save her arm. The zoo has said they will not be putting the tiger down. It was also stated that this tiger has never shown aggressive behavior before.

Let's start with common sense. If you stick your hand into an adult male tiger's cage, breaking protocol... What do you expect?  It irks me how whenever a wild animal such as a lion, tiger, or bear (oh my!) attacks someone at a zoo, the animal is held at fault. They are WILD animals, who's instinct is survival. They cannot just be kept in a cage and expected to behave like domesticated animals. I find it ironic how the zoo said "he has never shown aggression before," and that they "won't put him down." As if it is abnormal for tigers to bite; as if the tiger were to blame and should be punished for simply being a tiger, doing what tigers do. Especially when the employee had clearly broken the rules.
