A man, Herman Wallace, was released not too long ago from jail. He was in jail originally for a robbery, but then him and two other man were accused of murder, so he was in jail for longer. He was released recently, though, because the jury was all men, and women were not allowed to serve on it, so for some reason that caused for his release. I don't know, that part kind of confuses me. But apparently there was not a lot of evidence against him, and after all this time all three men still claimed they were innocent. There's something to be said if you can still say that after over 40 years of solitary confinement.
It sounds like the jail treated Mr. Wallace wrongly. It does not seem like he was the craziest person, at least from the article. And if he was guilty, there were people who have murdered more people than that, yet are not confined to solitary confinement. And 40 years of it! I feel like that is just ridiculous. If he wasn't crazy before that, he was crazy after it.

Byron Otis-I don't understand solitary confinement. It seems so insanely cruel, there has to be some alternative. It tears away at people's minds. This is such a sad story, I hope we can learn from it.
ReplyDeleteThe only way solitary confinement is ever acceptable is for people who are extremely dangerous and must be kept away from others, and even then it just makes them angrier and crazier. It's not a good way to deal with it, and this man's crime in no way deserved this punishment.
