Child falls into jaguar exhibit Heather McKay

On Friday, the peal of a young boy's scream rang out in Little Rock Zoo in Arkansas. The 3 year old boy was leaning over the rail of the jaguar exhibit to take a picture when his foot slipped over the rail and he fell 10-15 feet into the pen. He was then attacked by two cats who caused him extensive scalp laceration, a depressed skull fracture and minor puncture woundsThe boy was with his father and grandfather at the time of the incident, who say to have lost sight of him in their peripheral vision when he fell. The boy was rushed to the hospital and who's condition has gone from critical to stable and is expected to improve. This is a very frightening incident, however I am very glad that the child is recovering well.

This relates to APUSH because of the current issue of the fight for ethical treatment of animals. (many documentaries such as Food Inc. and Blackfish reveal the harsh and unnecessary treatment of animals) I am a huge stalwart for PETA and do believe that animals should be treated with greater love and care. This incident is an excellent example of something that could have been easily prevented if these beautiful animals were not caged up in a zoo. I am sorry that it happened, however this makes me very upset that we have to deal with penned up animals causing trouble when we were the ones to instigate it in the first place by holding these jaguars in captivity.

  1. This is only another story of animals stand for freedom. Humans are not considerate of animals and is that because the do not speak English? It is a fact that whales truly have more emotional attachment and feelings than humans do. It is crazy, but true. Incidents like this will only continue to happen, we need to be considerate of our entire environment and the things that live within it.
