School Shootings. LGBTQ Rights. Women's empowerment. Texas teens go there in 'American Idiot'
From January 3-6, I was a part of the Junior Players production of 'American Idiot the Musical' at the Moody Performance Hall, just across the street from Booker T. On the cast, there were 24 of us from 10 different schools and we all had diverse interests, thoughts, and opinions. But one thing was always held in common: we wanted American Idiot to send a message.
The article listed above. written by Nancy Churnin, talks about aa few of the different perspectives and thoughts held by the cast members, but the overall message from the cast is skimped over a bit so I wanted to take this opportunity to put it forward.
We care. Our generation, generation Z, has been painted as the generation that could care less about politics and the way the world around us work. But that is exactly the opposite. To quote endless amounts of posts on social media, "Just wait until under 18 Twitter can vote." As a generation, we want to have a better world for ourselves and for those who succeed us. This same attitude can be seen throughout history with those who founded our nation, and those who have helped it become a better place along the way. We aren't the authors of a constitution, we didn't abolish slavery, we didn't give women the right to vote. But we can amend what needs to be amended, we can end all prejudice, we can rid our society of the double standard between men and women. And we care. We want a better world and it's time for society and politics to hear us. It's time for everyone to be heard.
