Greenland’s ice is melting four times faster than thought- Rachel DuBard

In a recent study, it’s been found that Greenland, the worlds biggest island, is melting faster than scientists thought. Michael Bevis, the lead geoscientist in this study, discovered that Greenland hit a tipping point between 2002-2003 and the ice loss quickly accelerated and by 2012, the loss of ice increased by four times what it was previously in 2003. The scientists knew it was a problem by 2003 but by 2012 they had realized it was a way more serious problem as chucks of glaciers started to be noticed throughout the Atlantic Ocean. It was also found that between the yrs of 2002 and 2016. Greenland lost around 280 billion tons per yr. This will cause sea levels to rise to possibly 23 ft. As the Antarctic is also losing ice to an average of 252 billion tons a yr for the last decade, it’s the same story for western North America’s glaciers. The main cause of this is, you guessed it, global warming. All it takes is 1C, which it used to be hard for it to get over 0 degrees, but that has obviously changed. Without any change, almost all of Greenland could melt away. I find this so heart breaking, especially considering we currently have a president who doesn’t believe in global warming.

This relates to history bc of the constant global warming increase. We’ve been dealing with this for yrs, but the nation/world hasn’t done anything to even try to change it. With trumps belief that global warming isn’t real, there won’t be any changes any time soon. All we can do is try to take more attention to articles likes this and try to get it through to ppl that global warming is a serious problem causing more serious problems.

  2. It is critical that people acknowledge that global warming exists and it’s a problem. The issue is, people in power influence the ideas of those not in power, and that is what our president is doing. At this point, who knows what we can do to stop it, but if people refuse to acknowledge it, then we can’t even slow down the process.

  3. In only a few years the world will regret not having done something about climate change sooner. I think if we made real change now the effects could be lessened, but when people are unwilling to recognize the problem because fixing it requires change, nothing gets done.
