families and the government shutdown: Zoe Williams

This article discusses the best ways to talk about the government shutdown with children.  Many government employees are struggling to make ends meet without a paycheck and many of their children, of course, have questions about this.  ABC News talked to a child anxiety specialist who said that depending on the age of the child it may be easier to avoid questions about this situation.  Many children start learning about the world at the age of 8 so a lot of them won't be able to comprehend a lot of the topics necessary for discussing the reasoning about the shutdown.  Another thing that the specialist said was to be careful not to let personal stress and anger boil over into the children.  If you do talk about it with them, you should express calmness and understanding.

I was aware of the current government shutdown, but I didn't want to do a boring article solely about all the logistics so I thought this would be an interesting way to stay on topic but not be boring.  Obviously, this article was written for parents, specifically government worker parents.  Something that this article inadvertently points out is that the government shutdown is due to turmoil between members of mostly Americas upper class, but it's having the biggest effect on our working class, which is something that definitely isn't taken into account enough.  We shouldn't ever have to worry about how to tell our children why our government, which is supposed to keep our nation safe, is hurting us so much.  This article can be related to a drop in crop prices, which hurt the farmers in the west, who probably had to deal with discussing the depression with their children.

  1. The fact that the incompotence of congress and the white house is now negatively affecting so many people(and for so long) is disgusting.

  2. It saddens me that the government shutdown has been going on so long that parents actually have to explain to their children what it means for their family. I continue to pray for those with loved ones working for the government sectors that have been cut off from pay.
