Sydney Ewing- Arctic Precautions for Global Warming

British scientists have dug the longest ice hole in West Antarctica using a hot water drill, reaching the sediment below. The hole is about 1.3 miles from top to bottom. This hole is meant to help us better understand how the region can contribute to the rise in global sea-level by taking measurements and finding out how the water and sediments below the ice sheet help the ice move to melting in the sea.

This scientific achievement was completed in precaution of the impending sea-level rise because of global warming. Global warming has been a problem because of the industrial revolution, and especially the industrial revolution in America 1790s. The increase of the burning of coal (a key part of the Bessemer process) contributed to air pollution and over time has resulted in the global warming and sea-level problems we have now. Imagine if Carnegie knew the mess that his industry contributed to. Personally, I think that it's pretty cool that we have dug a hole that is 1.3 miles long… but maybe that's just me.

  1. Emma Burkey: It is inspiring that scientists continue to have the motivation to continue studying global warming and the regions that contribute to it because it is very hard to continue working for the understanding of something that many people still deny exists.

  2. I definitely agree with Emma, and do not understand how it is possible for people to continue to deny the existence of global warming, especially with the incredible amount of scientific research and statistics regarding an increase in fossil fuels such as carbon dioxide marked by the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. People need to educate themselves!
