In June of last summer, siblings Victor and Cynthia Liu went to visit their passing grandfather in a Chinese island along with their mother, Sandra Han. Within days of their arrival, police officers detained Sandra in a black jail and prevented the children from leaving China, even though all of them are American citizens. The police are trying to force the siblings' father to return to China to face criminal charges by holding the family hostage. The father, Liu Changming, a former executive at a state-owned bank, is accused of being a central player in a $1.4 billion fraud case. Although the children say their father broke ties with the family back in 2012, Chinese authorities have still held them for months under an exit ban, a growing tactic that has been contributing to the increasing tension between the US and China.
This article was written by Edward Wong and Michael Forsythe on November 25. This relates to current events because it shows how the relationship between China and the United States is becoming strained due to differences in citizenship laws and holding non-citizens hostage. I think that this is a problem because innocent people are being detained and it’s not doing any good.
This is absolutely terrifying! It's so sad that kids who were just going to visit their grandfather are stuck in a country when they thought they were all set to travel. This discourages people from visiting foreign countries because you never know what will happen, but that's such a shame. I hope they are all able to return soon.
ReplyDeleteIf our nation can't respect ourselves enough to have a competent leader, then how can we expect others to respect us? Its practically self induced open season. Russia and China finally feel enough leniency to not fear the consequences, but I can't even blame them.
ReplyDeleteThis is really sad... Its also not the best thing to hear that our biggest exporter, china, is having relationship issues with us over citizenship laws.I don't like that the china government is holding these kids too because to me it seems like a sign they are trying to make us understand. I'm not sure, but I hope the U.S. and Chinese government can figure out some compromises. - Joziah German
